Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department said Cathay Pacific could increase fuel surcharges from HK$171 ($21.90) to HK$231 on short-haul flights and from HK$710 to HK$924 on long-haul flights.

"Cathay Pacific regrets the need to impose this further surcharge on passengers but the airline reiterates that it is important to the sustainability of its business that the fuel surcharge level keeps pace with the increase in fuel prices," the airline said in a statement.

"Even after the latest adjustment, Cathay Pacific's fuel surcharges still lag far behind the surcharges imposed by other international airlines on comparable routes outside Hong Kong."

A total of 11 people from a tour group arranged by Wing On Travel to visit Macau, Dongguan and Shenzhen have come down with food poisoning after they returned to Hong Kong.

The Centre for Health Protection received a report of a suspected food poisoning case affecting four men and seven women, aged between six and 74. They joined the tour group to the mainland between Saturday and Monday (July 26 and 28) and developed gastroenteritis symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and fever after returning to Hong Kong.

Six of them have consulted private doctors and are now stable.
